Matcha is the whole green tea leaf that is finely ground into a powdered form. This means that matcha is packed full of health benefits because you are consuming the whole tea leaf. When you consume the whole leaf, you are consuming all of those amazing nutrients!
When you drink matcha, you are consuming the whole tea leaf dissolved into hot water. This means that you are getting the same benefits that you’d get from green tea, but the benefits are amplified by 137%! It is also more convenient and better for the environment, because you are not left with the waste of a tea bag after each drink of matcha.
Matcha tea is really good for you! A single serving of matcha is nutritionally equivalent to 10 whole cups of regular brewed green tea! Matcha powder also has 137 times the number of antioxidants than brewed green tea, making it an easy way to add powerful health benefits to your daily routine.
Matcha Me is passionate about selling some of the best tasting matcha in Australia. When selecting our matchas, we tried premium powdered green teas from many different regions of Japan, as well as many different grades of matcha. So, we are really proud of the product that we sell and we truly think it is the best around!
There are 3 grades of matcha - ceremonial, premium and blended or non-Japanese matcha. At Matha Me, We only sell premium grade matcha. Ceremonial grade matcha is an extremely high quality matcha which is only used for traditional Japanese tea ceremonies as it is very expensive compared to other grades. Premium grade matcha which is more affordable than a ceremonial grade yet still very high quality and can be used for everyday drinking, smoothie making or anything you can think of! We sell a premium organic matcha a premium non-organic matcha (labelled culinary, but don’t let that fool you because the quality is incredible and you can definitely use it for your morning latte).
Yes, matcha does contain caffeine. It has about 30mg or a teaspoon of caffeine. Compare that to coffee, which has up to 150mg depending on how it is brewed. Unlike coffee, matcha also contains L-theanine, an amino acid that is responsible for improved cognitive function and a feeling of calm. This combination of caffeine for stimulation combined with mental calm and clarity is why matcha was used by buddhist monks as an aid to meditation! Matcha is both a stimulant and a relaxant which makes it a great substitute for coffee.

The main antioxidant in matcha green tea (EGCG) is responsible for the weight loss benefits. Matcha contains this in 3 times the amount that regular green tea does, which is great because it boosts your metabolism and fat oxidation, which means matcha does help with weight loss! In addition, matcha is also very low calorie. 1 gram of matcha contains only around 3 calories, so if you are trying to lose weight, this is the drink for you!
Matcha has been used for thousands of years, and there is strong evidence for its exceptional health benefits so it is important to note that drinking matcha is very safe! However, on rare occasions, some sensitive people may experience a sick feeling when they drink matcha. This is because matcha does contain caffeine! Some people may drink a lot of matcha thinking that because it is tea, it must be low in caffeine. But remember, when you drink matcha you don’t need to use a lot at all! If you find that you are particularly sensitive, it may also be useful to avoid drinking matcha on an empty stomach.
Matcha has an incredibly rich and aromatic taste. The best way to describe it would be that it essentially tastes like regular green tea, although an incredibly smooth and creamy version of it, where the vegetal sweetness of the tea really comes alive. It’s almost like a fine wine because each grade of matcha is essentially a more and more fragrant and flavourful experience. Not only does each grade have a different taste and smell to it, each growing region imparts unique characteristics into the matcha powder as well.
To keep your matcha at its best, you should keep it in a cool dark environment. You can keep it in the fridge or even in your cupboards. If you store your matcha in your cupboards, you may notice that the colour fades over time, but it is still ok to drink. If you live in a warm environment we do recommend that you store it in the fridge.
Matcha and green tea are not the same thing. Matcha is made from green tea leaves but matcha is made from the finest quality green tea leaves and then turned into a beautiful powder! Green tea is just made from steeping green tea leaves. Matcha is also consuming the whole leaf, which means the benefits are a lot more than drinking regular green tea.
